The Scene Portal - Music
|
Modules are digital music files, made up of a set of samples (the instruments) and sequencing information, telling a mod player when to play which sample on which track at what pitch, optionally performing an effect like vibrato, for example. Thus mods are different from pure sample files such as WAV or AU, which contain no sequencing information, and MIDI files, which do not include any custom samples/instruments. Mods are extremely popular in the demo world and offer a way of making music of an acceptable level of quality rather cheaply. With the advent of high-quality sound hardware, new generations of mods may even rise to a sound quality nearing that of professional equipment.

(Atari)
Welcome to the pages of the biggest and only official Atari XL/XE music archive. Many of you have surely missed those great square-wave sounds and noises, that often belonged to your childhood :-) The archive you will find here contains almost 2200 songs (this number rises - see the diagram below) including both old-time and new-wave tunes from the early 80's till the latest 2006 contributions.

Ever since the birth of the Atari ST, different chip music formats have had different ways to use them. If you are coding a chip music player for the Atari ST you would have to use dozens and dozens of special ways to replay music. But in the mid 90's, BDC of Aura crew became tired of this inelegant system and decided to fix the issue once and for all. He then created the 'SNDH' file format. SNDH is actually the original songfile and replaycode with a header bolted on top of the music and replayer. The header has a unified calling interface no matter what type of chip music is hidden beneath it, and it has extended datas about the music.

There are sites with demos, and sites with module (MOD) music, but no sites really combining the two. Furthermore, I collect demos, and I like music, so it follows that I like collecting music from demos. "Demo music", in the traditional sense, has a unique feel to it. Energetic, yet warm and familiar (some dare call it "cheezy" :). Here you can find soundtracks to all sorts of demos, in the original module format. Unofficial site motto: If you can't see a demo, then at least you can still hear it!

Modland is a very large, and well organised module archive created and maintained by Coma (Daniel Johansson), which contains over 360,000 music modules in 290 different formats. The collection is distributed over FTP from the main site and a few mirrors.
Because of the size, navigating the collection can take some time, and looking for a specific file can at times be difficult. To remedy this, ExoticA provides an interface to the collection which allows searching and browsing by filename, author, format and collection. It even allows searching the instrument texts of some music formats.

This site is devoted only to so called music modules - computer music made in trackers.
Tunes avaible here in most cases have been written by amateur computer musicians since 1986.
Most of them are closely related to demoscene - a community of people interested in computer art, especially "demos" - realtime computer animations.
Site's main purposes have always been, are and will be: 1. To collect the best modules ever made and 2. To create place, where every tracker musician could easily insert his/her tunes

VORC is a news site dedicated to oldschool video game music and chiptunes, launched in 2001. We provide latest informations covering from Commodore 64 to little-known Japanese computers from day to day, under the slogan of '8-bit/16-bit music not just for nostalgia'. We're focusing on genuine chiptunes and chip-style music. As an exception, some pre-1996 video game soundtracks might be mentioned as well even if not really chip-like. However, less-chippy video game remixes and mere lo-fi music are out of our focus.
