The Scene Portal - Art

The phrase computer art scene or artscene for short refers to a community of individuals and groups who are interested and active in the creation of computer-based artwork.

The demoscene is a computer sub-culture that came to prominence during the rise of the 16 bit micros (the Atari ST and the Amiga), but demos first appeared during the 8-bit era on computers such as C64 and ZX Spectrum.

Demos began as software cracker's 'signatures'. When a cracked program was started, the cracker or his team would take credit via an increasingly impressive-looking graphical introduction called a "cracktro". The first time this appeared was on the Apple II computers in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Later, these intros evolved into their own subculture independent of cracking software. These were not initially called demos but rather letter, message, et cetera.

ACiD Productions

(Group)
ACiD Productions was originally founded in 1990 as ANSI Creators in Demand by five members: RaD Man, Shadow Demon, Grimm, The Beholder, and Phantom. Their work originally concentrated in ANSI and ASCII art, but the group later branched out into other artistic media such as music tracking, demo coding, and multimedia software development (e.g. image viewers). In the mid-1990s, ACiD created subsidiary groups responsible for these broader areas. For example, Remorse is the official ACiD sub-label responsible for ASCII art and other text-based graphics. Similarly, pHluid is responsible for module tracking and music production. Today, ACiD focuses largely on the preservation of digital art history, talk radio news, and sale of their DVD-based artscene archives.

Affinity

(Demo)
The purpose of this site is to be a Demo Scene Hub, in which you can ask any question you want (via the forum), or participate in the Scene Wiki Guide - In which the idea is to build up a vast knowledge of what the scene is all about. Basically anyone can update this wiki. You can report about anything - from your group/productions, or wax lyrically about the definition of "Dutch Coder Colours". Pretty Much anything. There is also the witty and informative blogs, which are made by the guys from Affinity. You can share out pain as well. The is also the one-liner, which you can enter any text you feel like, and it will be shown to the next visitors. Plus, as a super-dooper bonus, you can find out all about the Affinity Members, and you can even download some of our productions as well.

Atari ST Demo History

(Atari)
there was a tiny, cute computer called the Atari ST, a powerful machine based on an eight megahertz Motorola MC68000. Back in 1987 when the ST godfathers, the Exceptions (TEX), released their first demo "READ_ME.PRG" and the followups "Little Sound Demo" and "Little Colour Demo", the age of Atari ST demos began. The Exceptions were the inspiration for most if not all demo programmers (including the writer of these lines). Dozens of demos have been released in the following years. This website will just list those that should never be forgotten by the ST community.

This site is for those who are interested in new things happening in the C64 area and especially for those who don't feel retro, because they don't need to. Computer Demos - The Story So Far

(Demo)
Petri Kuittinen's essay on all things underground demo.

Computer demos should not be confused with the demo versions of commercial programs. They are "demos" too, but the word "demo" in this text means a program whose purpose is to present the technical and artistic skills of its makers and produce audiovisual pleasure to the viewer. A computer demo usually includes various kind of real-time produced computer graphics effects which have little relation to each other accompanied by music. In a way a demo could be described as a sort of music video or a short computer animation film without a plot or message other than just "hey, I can do this" and "greetings to my friends". Of course there is exception to every rule and some demos have a plot and message.

CuD 'Illegal' Archive

(C64)
In the years 1987-1989 there was just one big cracker zine in Europe. (With the term 'cracker' we hereby mean a person who removes protection from software.) Alongside the dutch magazine Hacktic this was probably the crown media of the European computer underground, comparable to TAP and 2600 in the United States. Word has it that Illegal was the main inspiration source for all underground diskzines later produced on C= 64, Amiga, Atari ST and IBM PC. Illegal was not the first cracker fanzine, and certainly not the last, but beyond reasonable doubt it was the biggest and most influential "Warez"-producer magazine in the world history of cracking.

Demoscene.info

(Demo)
Welcome to demoscene.info, a webportal providing information on the demoscene. The demoscene is a worldwide non-commercial network of creative minds involved in the making of so called 'demos'. Demos are computer generated music clips that show what kind of graphic and sound effects can really be done by using high-end computer hardware to its full potential. Demo-making is teamwork. As demos are rather complex any helping hand is welcome. Each scener provides the team with different skills. Graphicians and musicians create suitable pieces of art, the programmers fit all the parts together in an extensive amount of detail work to finally make it an executable program: the demo.

What once consisted of few hundred kilobytes of pics, is now over 500Mb in size, providing not only galleries, but interviews with famous graphicians, gfx articles, scene related news and gfx archives. Superior Art Creations

(Group)
Superior Art Creations, often referred to as SAC, is an underground artscene group which caters primarily to and is well known within the warez scene. During the mid to late nineties most of the notable ANSI artscene groups had distanced themselves from the warez scene, rather creating art for the sake of art, or for bulletin boards that were purely artscene related. Seizing this opportunity, SAC moved into this vacant territory and quickly became recognized as the leading group of warez scene artists. Towards the late 1990s, a good majority of NFO file ASCII art was created by various members of SAC. In 1999, lead ASCII artist Ferrex ascended into the role of senior staff and leader, continuing to control the group to this day.

Tristar and Red Sector Inc.

(Amiga)
Welcome to our little hideout in the Internetz. Founded in 1990, Tristar and Red Sector, Incorporate is one of the last active Groups, that made their way from the legendary Times, when Commodore owned the Households, til today, when Corporations like Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo are battling for our Minutes of Entertainment. Some people might say, that the Internetz destroyed the scene and indeed, times have changed and communication, friendship and attitude has evolved. The old days were different and we are trying to combine values from before the Internetz with the advantages of today!

Youth Uprising

(Demo)
elcome to the Youth Uprising [YUP] site. We are a group of demosceners [mostly] under the age of 18 years, dedicated to producing great and memorable graphics demos and intros. Feel free to take a look around and download some of our works, or get in touch with us. Purpose is a demo group created to keep the demo scene alive by attracting young people. We believe the scene should return to its former glory, and we also believe that "kids" like us are its future. The demo scene to come is not grim, and we are the proof.

ZINE - Behind the Scene

(Magazines)
ZINE is a digital magaZINE about the demoscene and related topics, such as real-time CGI, music, graphics and programming. The mag was originally born in 1989 on the Commodore Amiga. Issues 1 to 11 were released between 1989 and 1991, and ZINE enjoyed unrivalled popularity. After a long break, ZINE resurfaced on the PC in 2007 and has become the most popular mag of the scene ever since.
